No meeting on Friday [3rd July]

Hi all,

Due to the H1N1 issue, precautionary measures have to be taken, resulting in a suspension of all CCAs for this week. The school will be reviewing this status by the week so hopefully we'll be able to resume meetings by next week. Meanwhile, I'd urge all of you to finish selling your donation draw booklets. Those who have completed all 10 booklets can pass them to me anytime in school. Also, if possible, I do hope that you guys can take another 5-10 more booklets so that we can clear all the 700 booklets given to us. Remember, the more booklets we sell, the more money we get (1/2 goes back to us), and that'll mean more interesting courses for everyone.

Donation Draw Selling Day

Hi Scouts,

First of all, congratulations to all those who have attended and passed your PLTC. Be it fun or tiring, I hope this course has served its purpose of instruction and granting you all an idea of what the roles and responsiblities a PL should be equipped with. Please do not throw away your manual as there will be a time when you will need it for reference.

Anyway, as we slip into the 3rd week of holidays, it is vital that each one of us do a part for the unit through the selling of donation draw tickets. I can't emphasize the importance of raising funds for the unit since being a non-profit organization, most of our funding for activities and such will come from Job Week and Donation Draw. As such, I'm making it compulsory for everyone to sell a minimum of the 10 booklets issued (leaders this time round will also do our part, not to worry).

To make it easy for everyone, we'll be setting aside 2 days during the remainder of the holidays to try to clear as many booklets as possible. As such, here are the details below:

Wednesday [17th June]
Assembly Area: Unity Secondary
Duration: 0900hrs - 1700hrs
Attire: Scout T-shirt w any bottoms (shorts/berms/jeans). Proper shoes, strictly no slippers.
Note:
- PLTC participants holding on to the tents, spars, first-aid kit etc are to return the items to the Scouts Den. QM/AQM to ensure and do stock-taking.
- Please bring along a small bag with your Donation Draw tickets, pens, water bottle. Those who forget to bring their Donation Draw tickets will have to get extra from me, on top of what you have already at home.
- Those who have passed their booklets to their parents to help sell, not to worry. Do turn up as well and I'll issue you 5 booklets each. We still have 30+ booklets left over and our target this year is to clear whatever booklets that are given to us.
- We'll be assigning everyone a specific area to cover
- This event is not compulsory but everyone is strongly encouraged to turn up. Selling DD tickets can be a tad boring doing it alone, so why not do it all together instead of waiting till school reopens?

See you people on Wed!

SL Jeremy

Bear Grylls - Chief Scout of UK

Hi ALL,

My sharing for your reading.

Mr Bear Grylls had been appointed as the Chief Scout of UK and he is only 34.

Bear Grylls: 'Why I became Chief Scout'
TV adventurer Bear Grylls has been named as the youngest
ever Chief Scout. The 34-year-old said he wanted to encourage
more adults to volunteer so the 33,000 youngsters on waiting
lists could join Scout groups. Grylls has presented TV programmes
such as Man vs Wild and Born Survivor.

Bear Grylls and Jo Whiley
Bear Grylls was talking to Jo Whiley on her Radio 1 show

Why should people be scouts these days?
It's just a great chance for kids to get out there, follow their dreams and
grab life and go for a bit of an adventure. Scouts provide a great
framework to kids to find that in a good, safe, fun environment.

Were you ever a scout?
I was, when I was about eight. I remember turning up on day one as a
scout and I was told, 'Here's one match and one sausage. Now cook it'.
And I was thinking, 'There's no way this is going to last long'. Then they
taught us how to build a fire. I get so many kids coming up to me now and
they say, 'How can I learn to do some of the stuff you do on Born Survivor?'
And the truth is, the basis came from scouting.

Do you know the scout's promise?

I'm learning it. I'm learning it. I had it dropped on my head so many times
as a child. But I'm only on day one of the job. All I know is I want to have
loads of fun with loads of scouts.

How many badges did you have when you were a scout? What badges
did you get?
I was actually quite a bad scout, is the truth. I think if somebody had told me
when I was aged eight or a scout leader that I'd end up as Chief Scout, they
probably would have fallen over laughing. But I was a kid with not a huge
amount of confidence and it gave me that confidence that I could go for
these things. Life's a journey. We build up bit by bit.

Did you ever cheat to get any of your badges?
No. But do you know what? There are so many badges kids can get nowadays.
There are like 200, from rafting to snowboarding to rock climbing, paragliding,
even cooking, photography. So it's amazing. I'm super proud.

What kind of music are you into?
You've given me so much grief about this. It's because once I came on Radio 1
and said my favourite band was Abba and you've laughed at it ever since. I've
come more prepared this time. As head of the Scouts, it should be either Scouting
For Girls or I've got a son called Marmaduke, so we could do the Marmaduke Duke.
